What a cozy murder mystery
Have you wondered, as I have, how a book about murder can be described as “cozy”? Well, after reading The Thursday Murder Club, I finally get it.
Cozy murder mysteries, or “cozies,” are typically light-hearted stories about — well, murder. But instead of focusing on the gruesome details of how the murder was committed, they center on the puzzling question of “whodunit.” Typically, what makes these stories cozy is the lovable, quirky genius who is sure to solve the case, the warm, tight-knit community that the genius calls home, and the funny, relatable moments that unfold along the way.
In Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club (the first book in a five-book series), we meet four protagonists — amateur crime-solvers who gather in a secret room every Thursday night to discuss real cold-case files, shared with them by a former detective inspector. This is their idea of fun. So when a real murder occurs in their peaceful village, our motley crew is eager to crack the case.
