A Group of Prolific Writers

As part of my quest to improve the quality and speed of my writing, I joined an amazing writers’ group a few months ago. Some members are published, while others are on that path. This experience is special because, unlike groups I’ve belonged to in the past, this one has nine members who meet every two weeks, always on time, and work together for hours. Each member shares a 1,500-word piece to be critiqued and offers helpful and honest critiques to their fellow writers. Whether it’s book chapters, feature articles, or short stories, these engaged writers — many of whom work full-time — consistently prepare impressive pieces for review.

During the first two meetings, I did not produce a piece of writing that I felt comfortable enough to share with the group. I would underestimate the time it would take to brainstorm, write, and edit an original article every two weeks. I still attended the meetings but had nothing to present.

I decided to closely track my writing time for a week. I realized that my daily writing activities were not going to bring me closer to my goals.

Being Busy with Writerly Things is Not Writing
